I like Edward Gorey's work, actually I don't know if I like everything he does... the technique though, cross hatching, it's amazing cause he is so neat with it...
I have a book from him, actually two of them, they show pretty awesome works he did.

My three favorite Gorey's, which you should check out, are The Unstrung Harp, The Curious Sofa (which is under his psuedonym, Odgred Weary and is incredibly creepy), and... and... ah crap, I forgot the last one. I feel so ashamed of myself.
