OP Chapter 690

ONE OF THE BEST CHAPTERS EVER.

This chapter was seven different kinds of awesome.

I’m very very glad to see Luffy kicking Caesar’s ass. It’s about time! Besides being a complete bastard, Caesar also strikes me as a bit of an idiot, genius mad scientist or not. Hello! You’re talking to the guy who declared war on the World Government, defeated two Shichibukai, and crashed that war at Marineford two years ago; what on earth makes you think that he’s going to stop hurting you just because Doflamingo’s backing you up?!

This all makes his smackdown very satisfying indeed.

I feel terrible for Kinemon, but I still fell down laughing when I saw his face. :D

Smoker’s fight with Vergo was awesome. I appreciate the fact that Vergo was smart enough to see that Smoker’s fight seemed off, but I guess all villains needed to gloat a bit. Still, it’s nice to have an antagonist who isn’t a complete idiot (read: Caesar).

The bottom line is, this chapter belongs to Law.

His words to Doflamingo were beyond awesome. Even while giving the “You can’t possibly touch me!” speech, Doflamingo seemed a little wary. There seemed to be some tension in his words and he was just shouting louder and higher to cover that up. Because Doflamingo isn’t an idiot; he knows what’s coming even while denying it.

I absolutely adore Law for sassing not only Vergo, the man who traumatized him in the past, but the puppet master too. Things in the OP world are changing (they have been changing for two years now), but Law somehow seems to be in the middle of it, orchestrating at least a part of the events.

His last words suggested that the Supernovae had a plan to overturn the world. Like Law said, none of them were idle in the last two years. And maybe this is just me, but an alliance between the Eleven Supernovae would be incredible and probably just enough to tip the scales. I doubt that any of the Supernovae, even Luffy, could go toe-to-toe with a Yonkou right now, but all of them together? They’d make a mess of the power balance in the New World and completely screw the World Government over.

This is one of the reasons why I love One Piece so much: sure, it’s a story about a boy with a big dream, but it’s so much more than that. It’s not all fantasy and fiction, it can be about the real world too. The political turmoil in the New World and the OP world in general is getting very, very interesting. I really admire how Odacchi can produce such interesting political scenarios and make them work. For such a violent reality like the OP world to be controlled not only by physical strength (which is what it seems like on the surface), but also political might adds a certain layer of depth to the story that many others lack. Not that I’m saying that political intrigue automatically equals profound and deep insight, but many tried and many failed. Odacchi does it right.

Oh, and did I mention that I positively squealed when Law cut the island? Not just the room, not just the factory, Law cut the island. That’s Mihawk-level standards right there.

I’m still wondering what SAD is. I’m sure it’s somehow related to both Law’s and Doflamingo’s Jolly Rogers. Doflamingo must like that stuff an awful lot. Enough to make an anti-smiley face his sign, which I admit is a lot creepier than it has any right to be, all because it’s Doflamingo’s.

I also rather enjoy watching Doflamingo frown. He’s so used to things going his way; it’s very satisfying seeing him squirm.
