Did NOT expect this

You know what, it’s 2 AM where I live right now but I DON’T CARE BECAUSE THIS.

IT’S THE EIGHTH DOCTOR.

IT’S THE EIGHTH DOCTOR.

I screamed when I saw him because I did not see that coming. It’s such a great surprise, the kind that leaves me breathless.

I’m a NuWho fan. I’ve never watched classic Who and I’ve never listened to Doctor Who Big Finish (I plan to do both in the future). But I did watch the Eighth Doctor TV Movie and fell in love with Eight almost instantly. Paul McGann was brilliant; he certainly deserves a longer run than he had. While Big Finish is amazing, it’s still different than seeing the Doctor on screen.

After the announcements that classic Doctors weren’t involved in the 50th Anniversary episode, I stopped hoping. Ten and Eleven in the same episode is plenty, really. I wanted more Doctors but I never thought it likely.

Having Eight come back is probably the best way ever to tie together classic Who, Big Finish, and NuWho. I’m ridiculously happy because Eight is confirmed without a doubt to be canon and can we all go and give him the love he deserves?

But honestly, I’m an emotional mess right now. I had a long squee session on Tumblr, but I really wanted to write and gush more because Tumblr is rather limited when it comes to actually writing entries. There were so many great things about that prequel. It’s seven minutes long. It should not have the power it currently holds and reduce me into a sobbing mess. But it just sets things up so perfectly and above all, it had Eight in it. It’s been 17 years; that’s practically my whole life. Whatever faults Moffat has in writing Doctor Who, I have to say that this mini episode was practically perfect.

Eight’s much grimmer now, snarky and sharp-tongued. He got a haircut and a wardrobe change. But I can still see the man he used to be in this incarnation, and it’s amazing.

And just the whole reason for his death, the whole manner of his regeneration. Lots of parallelism to his beginning and lots of heartache. “Physician, heal thyself.” Best last words.

I actually have a tag on my Tumblr called “I want Eight baaaaack”. I never expected it to happen and I’m still in shock that it did. I don’t care that he dies six minutes into the video. He got to say goodbye and we got to see him regenerate. There’s closure. It’s fantastic and it hurts at the same time, but I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy while one of my favorite characters died.

Because even without having listened to Big Finish, I have a very soft spot for Eight and he’s one of my favorite Doctors. It’s high time that he got the recognition and the air time that he deserved.

Of course, the prequel also raises lots of questions and concerns and AAAAAAGH, but I’ll leave meta to the other folks who know both classic Who and Big Finish better than I do. For now, I’ll just be satisfied with the fact that one of my greatest wishes for Doctor Who came true. I’m afraid that this prequel just upstaged this year’s Who for me, and I’m not sorry. I also desperately hope that the 50th Anniversary episode can live up to this.

Oh, this is ridiculous. I'm grinning so hugely that my jaws hurt.

I still have school tomorrow, but I’m pretty sure that my excitement can carry me through another few days. It’s better than caffeine. It really is.

doctor who, squee
