It is a bright, clear day, and Mrs Strange is looking for something in the garden. Or at least, that is what her steady, purposeful pace down the path and only cursory glances at the flowers themselves would seem to suggest. And Richard, while not precisely looking for her, has kept an eye out. Because he is going to prove to himself that he has not been avoiding her.

So when sees her walking in the garden, he moves to intercept her at an easy walk.

It startles her, a little, to see him-- not that it should, since he hasn't been avoiding her and she hasn't been avoiding him because they have no reason to. But it does, just the same.
