True. I wanted to make a post about it and why I think I would have wanted someone other than Peter Jackson directing it and then I realized I couldn't be bothered. Not very excited about the next ones is all I have to say. :\
on the other hand the critics hated this one so much
Did they? I saw mostly praise up until now but maybe it's praise from the nerds, I dunno
the worst part is that foresee myself going to see the next two EVEN IF THEY'RE BADWell I'm seriously considering illegally downloading the rest when they come out to watch it at home, because I don't care about 3D, 48 fps or even the way the story is treated. It was exactly like the previous Lord of the Rings movies, and while I liked the trilogy at the time, it's been ten fucking years. Give us something new. Not more of the same shit with the helicopter shots and battle scenes that have nothing to do with the plot... you want to do the Silmarillion because you're a Tolkien nerd and no one except Tolkien nerds likes the Silmarillion, fine, just don't put it in my fucking Hobbit. It lacked simplicity, which was the reason why I liked the book when I couldn't finish LotR in book form. Jackson deprived Bilbo of his role as a hero, during the whole film there are basically just shots on Martin

The Hobbit currently has a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is...well, that's not very good. Actual film critics--not fans, but people who review films--point out that it's not a very good film. It's bloated, poorly paced, and as you pointed out, spends most of its time forgetting that Bilbo is the main character. Even critics who are fans of the original story, like Peter Hartlaub of the San Francisco Chronicle (huge nerd and the Chronicle's pop culture critic), were extremely disappointed. The only people who seem to like this movie are the hardcore Tolkien nerds who, well, like the Silmarillion. Which, you know, good for them, I'm glad they've got something that they like and can go see five times in theatres; I'll be watching Les Mis or something.
In the middle of watching that one wizard with the sleigh pulled by rabbits (while he was still in the forest), I had the thought that this is a movie that's being told to children. And then, I remembered that I had heard somewhere that the book was originally written for either Tolkien's own children or his grandchildren. So, I was okay for it. But good lord, did they have to stretch it out so much?
