The screen lights up and my phone buzzes lightly beside my pillow. I take it into my hand and open the text messages: all I see is a question mark.
The pause button has been pushed.
I don’t need to know what time it is before I stand up and leave the room. During the night, time comes to a halt, it’s either dark or still dark, there’s nothing in between. It’s this time of the day that I like the most.
Entangled fingers, longing stares and the night makes me invincible and vulnerable at the same time.
Minho’s hugs are a bit too tight and my grip leaves red marks on his bare back; we hold on to each other as if our life depended on it and somehow it does. Question mark nights are rare.
During the night nothing can become everything and everything can become nothing.
I don’t understand a single word he whispers into my hair and he doesn’t know how much I enjoy the scent of his shampoo.
During the night I can leave everything behind and act the way I would never be able during the day.
Little confessions fill the quietness in the room, words I would never dare to say out loud, reach Minho’s ear and make his grip around my waist even tighter.
The night creates something that makes me wait for a single question mark the whole time.
Our nights are filled with muffled laughter, comfortable silence or hot breath, which grazes our skin, while we scratch the border of doing the unspeakable. Yet, as soon as a single ray of light appears at the horizon we return to our rooms.
Reset.
And we become dongsaeng and hyung again, group members, best friends, brothers. Nothing more and nothing less.

Another night, another question mark.
Pause.
Same excitement, same nervousness, thrilling touches and soft kisses and somewhere between we decide to have an adventure.
We run up, up, up until we reach the top and are greeted with the chilly night air. Everything around us is black and red and white, the city is burning with life and we, who are in the center of attention, are invisible right now.
Behind the skyscrapers, a faint beam of sunlight appears; it’s starting to become dawn. The spell is broken.
Reset?
No.
A whispered Can we not go back to how we were?, a soft Yes, his warm chest against my back, my hands on his and the night is not needed anymore.
The sun rises in front of us and another button has been pushed.
Play.
