The bear community isn't really anything special. Its pretty much a clone of all the other ones. The difference? They let in hairy guys [or lesbians with beards.. it depends on where you are at the time.]
It didn't turn inward or outward. It just became "The next big thing" and went mainstream. If you need proof look at Kendall, bearpalooza, and all the bearruns out there. There used to not be a lot of those and now theres like what 50-100 bear events a year. Its pretty much a popularity contest even if in its on frame.
I don't take part in any of the gay community stereotypes, as a squirrel theres not many groups that accept me. So I say fuck it to the groups and just accept people. And most people DO accept me regardless of what some iconic look states. Its better to just be accepted for who you are and now what you look like. Unfortunately the mass gay census disagrees.
My closest gay friends are considered bears. And being overweight, I feel less judged and I feel more comfortable and more at home at the 'bear bars'. So consdiering that my friends are all bears, and I spend a lot of time at bear bars, I've never felt like I'm in that 'bear community' at all. I also find it funny that the bear community thinks they're all welcoming and all that. Shit no. Like every other gay 'community' you have to be hot to be accepted. I can't tell you how many times my hot bear friends will introduce me to their bear friends, and then as soon as my friends aren't near me, I no longer exist to these other bears. They are as vain and cliquey, and even worse, my experience has been, if they don't want to fuck you, then they don't really want to be your friend. But that leaves me with no community what soever, so I attach myself to the bear community, but I'm always an outsider to it. Ptown is only an hour from me, so I wanted to go just to see what it was like but I didn't end up going.
I do because I think its just a natural cycle. These things happen. It will flux in and out and change endlessly and after we are gone it will be what it once was again eventually.
