The leader dug his little shovel into the moist soil of the little flower patch, creating a small crater that would fit the next crop of field pansies that was resting next to his shoe. His gloved hand picked it up carefully, eyes scanning the plant to make sure he wasn’t ripping anything off by accident. His movements were cautious as he lifted the little flower into the awaiting ground, shoveling the damp earth around it with his hands. He patted the soil around it to make sure it would stand, and a small smile curved his lips up when he saw the result.
“This is so boring!”
The whine came from the second spot to his right, and Hakyeon turned his head to look at the unimpressed twenty-three year old, whose full lips were pressed into a childish pout. The leader had half a mind to go over and smack him but he refrained, glancing at the lenses of the cameras on the other side of the patch that were directed at their progression. He opted to take a small amount of soil into his hands, indicating Taekwoon (who was squatting between them) to move back a little bit. He did so reluctantly, giving the red head a rather condescending eye. When the fire line was free, he balanced the moist earth onto their main vocal, succeeding in draping the dirt onto his light pink shorts.
“Wha- Hyunng! What was that for? Look at my shorts, they’re all dirty!”
His exclamations were followed by some attempts to rub away the soil from his beloved pants, only managing to make the stains worse. Jaehwan looked up to meet the leader’s eyes, expression clearly discontented. Standing up to make his way over to the elder the dirt fell onto his shoes, and immediately Jaehwan started stomping the ground.
“Aah! I have soil in my shoes! This is yucky!”
Hakyeon could see Taekwoon enjoying the sight of the younger with a small, mischievous smile, and Hakyeon decided that he had done enough to punish Jaehwan. He figured that Taekwoon would have his fun with him even if he didn’t do anything more, hopefully not overdoing it in the process. He didn’t want to have sand all over their dorm later tonight. The leader turned back to the flowers before him, not giving Jaehwan another glance.
“Ken-ah, this is volunteering. Stop complaining in front of the cameras.”
A chuckle came from Hakyeon’s other side at the words, and he recognized it to be Hongbin’s melodic one. A smile grazed at his own lips - the visual’s laugh had always been endearing.
“I don’t see the problem - I find this to be rather fun.” The younger said, and to prove his point he dug his little shovel into the ground with enthusiasm. “He always complains when he has to sit still in a place for too long. I mean, even Leo-hyung is enjoying himself.” A small gravel flew past his neck at those words, eliciting another bright laugh from his lips.
Hakyeon made a small sound of agreement. The weather was nice; for once not a cloud darkening the sky as it usually was during the Korean summer. It had rained the day before, but now the sky was clear and the temperatures were still moderate due to the still progressing hours of the morning. They didn’t have to practice and could enjoy the nice weather outside for once, even if the cameras were monitoring their work the entire time.
His eyes wandered down to the left side of the group, landing on the youngest and Wonshik, who were currently having a ‘who-can-plant-pansies-fastest’ competition. Sanghyuk was clearly winning, and the wide grin on his face was smug as he finished up his last ministrations before pumping his hands up in victory.
“I won! I did it! Ravi-hyung, you’re so slow!”
Wonshik just grumbled into this shirt as he tried to get the little flower to stand proud, hands straining from controlling the urge to just pull it out again and throwing it onto the sidewalk.
“That’s not fair, mine was crooked so it wouldn’t stand!”
Sanghyuk ignored the other’s grouchiness, bobbing his head to the rhythm of his self-proclaimed victory song while getting onto the next crop of yellow flowers.
Hakyeon felt contented to see his members having a good time during this schedule, knowing that they had spent too much time inside for the past weeks due to practice and other events. He resumed planting the next flower, the smile on his lips mirroring the sun shining down on them, silently humming to himself. It had been a good idea to sign them up for volunteer work.
“AAAH! Eeeeeew, Leo-hyung just put soil down my shirt! N-hyuuuuung!”
Yes, Hakyeon repeated to himself as he tried to ignore Jaehwan’s disgusted voice, yes it was a good idea.
