i've never studied art history formally, but my friends who do often make notecards. on one side they print out the photograph of the painting, and on the other, write a few lines of information. you could also try reading your notes outloud, or changing the lyrics of your favourite song with key facts in the chorus.

as for me, i hardly ever study because the humanities/linguistics are pretty intuitive for me to learn, and it's easy for me to retain information. i also have found i have a photographic memory, which is nice for when i have to remember the location of countries in eastern europe or the shapes of tissues for human anatomy and physiology. however, i'm not sure i make the most of this skill; i have yet to learn how to properly use/prepare a photographic mind in terms of studying for science tests... which i often do poorly on :(

When it comes to languages and other humanities courses, such as literature, i have no problems with memorization. I hear it once and it sticks. However, with art history, it just doesn't stick. Well, it it isn't where my passion lies anyway, so it's okay.

For science, use mnemonic devices! sounds stupid, but it works (for me at least). Although I haven't taken a science course since high school, so I don't know how valid my advice is, in terms for myself, anymore.

ohh if i had more time, i would definitely use this idea.

and i envy your one-try memory. Unfortunately, this memory only works for me when it comes to learning languages.
