To anyone who's seen it:

Does Lost in Translation get better after the first thirty-five minutes? I had heard plenty of good and plenty of bad, and looking at the preview before I started watching it, I wouldn't have wanted to rent it anyway, but "you either like it or lump it" movies get the best of my curiosity, unless it's movies like Resident ( Read more... )

watch the entire movie. if the end does not move you just a little tiny bit, you are not a human. which we already know. it's boring because the whole movie is about loneliness, which is really boring. i guess i liked the idea of two people being lonely in the most populated city in the world.

Do you mean number of people per square kilometer or whatever? I think Mexico City surpassed Tokyo in sheer numbers awhile ago, although Tokyo is certainly still pretty huge.

I didn't find the movie boring at all, but tastes differ. Having experienced Tokyo myself probably made some difference, but plenty of people liked it who have never been, so I wouldn't call it a deciding factor.

I normally abhor sad movies, and I would characterize Lost in Translation as fairly sad, so it's actually a bit surprising that I did like it, although I thought it did a good job mixing in humor. Did you get to the part where Bill Murray is filming the whiskey commercials? I thought that was hilarious.

Ultimately, of course, as I said, tastes differ. I didn't see The Virgin Suicides, so I can't really compare the two--although I did read the book and absolutely LOATHED it. See my review.

I think she made a reverse Jarmusch movie. Where instead of having foreigners in American cultural surroundings she had the Americans in another country. It's think it's sorta brilliant.

Don't watch Kubrick's Lolita!! Just... don't. Especially if you've read the book. He totally de-romanticizes the story. If you want a good movie version of the story, get the one with Jeremy Irons.

As for Lost in Translation... I thought it was entertaining, had some good cinematographic moments, but other than that, it wasn't anything to write home about. It's a lot better than The Virgin Suicides, though.

Yeah, I was sort of upset--well, not sort of--at all that was cut out. If I hadn't read the book the movie wouldn't have made that much sense to me. Well, it would have, as a movie, but the book was much better.

I do plan to see the other one, though.
