♛ in depth
Personality:What someone would first notice about meeting Axel would be that he is selfish, sarcastic, and arrogant. Confident and cocky, he can stroll into almost any situation with his head up and grin wide. On the note of him being selfish, Axel's general philosophy is 'save yourself'. His pride has no issue leaving someone behind, or letting him simply run away. As long as he gets out alive, he doesn't care about pride or honor. It might be kind of harsh to say it, but there's no denying the fact he only cares about himself.

Also, if it comes down to it, he'll go through whoever he has to, whether they're ally or not. Just because he's working with you doesn't mean he cares about you, and the truth of it is he probably honestly thinks he'd be better off without you. He's the type who tends to work alone, and is fully confident in his ability to do so.

A lot of people make the mistake that's he's stupid, when he's quite the opposite. Though he isn’t a scientist, Axel knows how to deal with people very well, and is able to worm his way out of almost any situation. One of his skills is he's an amazing talker. He can twist words against the most intelligent of opponents. Also, he's a fast thinker, and can outwit any of his opponents. He's sly, with a devil-may-care attitude and a penchant for causing trouble. That's probably one of the reasons Axel appears so careless. His actions are often seem rash, but we shouldn't underestimate him. On top of being crafty, Axel is also amazingly skilled in combat.

All these skills combine as we reach one of the most crucial aspects of Axel's personality: his double-crossing. Though there are alot of things he seems to be, one of Axel's deadliest points is the fact that he can usually make you believe what he wants you to believe, preferring that he keeps as much about him as private as possible.

He plays his role so well, he rarely leaves you in doubt of his alliance. This is achieved through a number of methods, from killing off an ally without batting a lash to belittling himself. He easily throws away his pride in favor of survival, and as he's really the only person he's looking out for, he'll do anything to achieve that. With that in mind, it goes without saying that it's almost impossible to tell whether or not Axel is on your side.

However, there are much deeper layers to him that give him quite a contrast. It's rather shocking to find that, despite appearing calm and in control of himself, he can sometimes let his 'emotions' get the best of him. Deep down, Axel is a passionate being, always living on the edge, and enjoying the rush of the moment.

Though he is overly selfish almost all of the time, there are times when he can be rather selfless. The masses don't mean a thing to him, but if there is even one person he cares for, he'll do almost anything for them. That one person will earn his undying loyalty and friendship, and if it came to it, he might even put them before himself (quite the feat for Axel). An exception to his 'standard' demeanor is with those very few with whom he has a friendship. To them he is both a mischievous older brother and a patient mentor, happy to share with them what he's learned and experienced. And, embarassingly, he's kind of a total dork, cracking stupid jokes, killing time and ... pretty much doing what friends do.

With certain friends in particular, one will find Axel to be violently protective. While fairly certain of others' abilities to defend themselves, he also won't (except perhaps under extenuating circumstances) simply stand by while those he is loyal to are in danger. If he's in distress, this makes Axel ...upset. For a someone like him, that's kinda saying something. Aside from WARNING: NUCLEAR LAUNCH DETECTED levels of potential fury.

Canon Background: Here.

AU Background: On the eighth of August, a building in Fletz, Lacour was destroyed in a wide-scale fire. The source of the fire was unknown at the time but it had consumed the entire apartment, resulting in the death of a middle-aged couple and subsequently, a newborn baby had it not been thrown out the window right before the flames engulfed the apartment. The baby was caught by a team of firefighters working on containing the blaze and was then taken to the local fire department so its next of kin could be contacted. An elderly woman arrived three days later to pick up the baby and after signing the necessary papers, she returned to her hometown. It was later discovered that the fire originated in the baby's bedroom, right in the spot where the crib was placed.

And that was how Axel's life began.

Though she wasn't exactly young, Axel's grandmother did her best to raise him in a modestly large (read: two bedroom) house in Crescent, Cross. Since early childhood, Axel had an uncanny attraction to fire and sources of heat; his grandmother often found him sitting just a little too close to the fireplace or playing with lighters and matchbooks. It was dangerous stuff for an eight year old, but try as she might, she could never separate Axel from them. And Axel didn't exactly understand it either; didn't understand why he'd get so hot when he got angry, why he didn't feel cold at all during winter, why sometimes he'd feel compelled to touch the flames he stared so longingly at. He was hopelessly enamored by it- the color, the warmth that felt so much like being in a soft embrace that he could barely recall when he was still too little to be remembering things.

It was ironic, how he found what nearly killed him to be the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.

Axel knew early on that he was different, from his personality down to his body temperature, which would always be at a constant 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit. But this fact did not deter him, even when he was feared by fellow classmates and looked down upon by teachers when his emotions would get the better of him. He enjoyed being strange, and in his grandmother's eyes, he was unique. It was something that got him into fights a lot, the simple fact attributing to his desire to express his thoughts regardless of the consequences. It wasn't until he turned thirteen that he and his grandmother discovered his latent ability to manipulate fire; all it took was a careless skateboarder who accidentally ran into his grandmother on their way home from the market, knocking her down onto the sidewalk. The rest of what happened was somewhat foggy for him, though when he had calmed down enough, the skateboard was burnt to a crisp and so were the small bushes lining the walkway, as he stared at the rapidly retreating back of the boy. He and his grandmother quickly returned home and Axel went to bed that night, restless and confused.

Not long after the incident, Axel's grandmother passed away in her sleep and he was alone again. Taking the money they had, Axel gathered his things and left the house, setting it on fire before he went. He didn't go to school and wandered around Cross for a while, trying to survive on his own and finding a place to stay. During this time, Axel's free optimism faded into a slippery, underhanded persona; doing odd jobs and other questionable things just to get by, Axel toughened up physically and emotionally on his own. He was a swindler though, a fast talker and an equally fast thinker and that, more often than not, was what kept him out of trouble. But he wasn't the only one- there were other kids like him living on the streets and it was like one huge game of survival of the fittest; you either had it or you didn't, and Axel did all he could to stay in the game, teaming up with those who were exceptionally successful and feeding them words to get on their good side, gain their trust and a little something extra for himself before he took them down in the end. Eliminate the competition, it was the first rule of survival and Axel did just that; didn't matter who they were, what was important was that he stayed alive at the end of the day. It was a difficult time, but Axel somehow made it through.

A few months later, Xemnas found him sleeping on the street and took him in, bringing Axel to his mansion in Cyril. There, Axel met other kids like him and Axel being how he is fit in well amongst the others. The people here weren't exactly afraid of him, they were different and while that would normally be a good thing, it didn't settle well with Axel. He wanted to be different, wanted to be remembered, to be loved- because the only people who did were gone. It was then that he decided to explore more of his powers, to become unique. Over time, more kids joined their group and he eventually met Roxas and Xion, becoming good friends with them and slowly, they replaced the emptiness that his grandmother's death had left in him.

Eventually, Roxas received an invitation to the Academy and Axel convinced him to join. Though he was alone somewhat after that, it wasn't long before he received one of his own and he accepted in a heartbeat. After all, he could meet up with Roxas and get out to explore more of the world, and his grandmother... well, she always wanted him to be great, right?

Appearance: Spiky, fire engine red hair and vibrant green eyes are probably the first things you'll notice. And under those cat like eyes are two, small triangular shaped tattoos. He's also pretty tall, around 6'1'' and is rather on the... lean side. Just barely borderline anorexic. His limbs are equally long and lanky and anyone else in his body probably wouldn't be able to function correctly, but he does a pretty good job of it. Don't let that lanky frame fool you though, he's pretty strong and can probably kick your ass if he needs to.
