I read your book and it is the most insightful book that I have read about self injury. I had a hard time trying not to cry through some of it because it is just so real.

Thank you so much for being courageous enough to go through part of my struggle with me. The book was very difficult to write (I cried--a lot!) but through the process, learned a lot about myself. I never imagined that other people might be able to relate to my thoughts and deeds. It has been an amazing comfort to know that other self-injurers are supporting me on my journey. Bless you and may you too find healing as you search for answers.

Hi Vanessa,

I was just looking for books to read and stumbled upn yours. It is so good to see that there is some one else in the world who wants to over come and has overcome self mutilation and anorexia.
I am 23 and it has been 8 months since I've self mutilated or starved and for me that is amazing.
I just wanted to say that Im glad to know that I'm not alone in the recovering aspect of it all.
Thank you
if you want you can email me at britestarr_99@yahoo.com my name is Tina

Congratulations Tina on 8 months of recovery!! I know what a struggle it has been and I'm so proud of you for making it this far! :)
Know that you are NOT alone and that there are millions of people in the world who can relate to your situation. I had no idea this was true until I started to speak out about my experiences. Be encouraged and keep on fighting!

Because of the situations I found myself in as a child, I knew very early in life that I would not have children, and took this belief to the bitter end and had my tubes tied two years ago. I fully understand the fears you have and applaud you for being stronger than I was. Your children are lucky to have you as a mother, because just having the courage to bear them and raise them alone says a tremendous amount about your character and love for them. NO parent is perfect. No matter how hard you try, there will be mistakes you make, but that is part of life and the learning process. I do not know of anyone else personally who self-injures (other than from annonymous e-mail messages) so I can't tell you where to find more answers. However, if I were you, I would encourage you to find a support group, like a Mother's Day Out program or something for mothers with small children and get involved. You need support as a mother, and these groups, from what I hear through my sisters-in-laws, are phenominal and free! For help with self-injury ( ... )

I think you are doing exactly what you need to be doing. What do you want to get from a self-injuring parent that you aren't able to get from other parents? Reassurance that you aren't alone? Trust me. You're not! You said you didn't want your kids to be the way you are. Do you know why you are the way you are? Have you explored the deep-seated reasons behind your self-injury? This is critical information for you! Just like you want your children to be healthy and happy, they want that for you too. Continue searching for answers from people who can help you find them. :)
