This came up yesterday while I was at Yale, and I'm really curious if I'm the only one who pronounces this word the way I do, as seems to be the case after yesterday's conversation...
Interesting that "sherbert" is an acceptable alternate spelling... Everyone involved yesterday spelled it "sherbet" when asked but pronounced it "sher-bert"--and because of my adamant stance of it being "sher-bit," they're now all calling me Sherbert for a nickname.
I think it's funny and cute, especially when Alexis was like, "When we finally get you to compete at the comps, we'll chant, 'Go Sherbert!'" XD
And yeah, I don't know why it did that. I was hoping I fixed it fast enough that not many people noticed it. :x
Until I realised what it looked like (two sher-bits put together), I thought that was what you were calling it and were wondering if anyone said it that way too. I was thinking: wacky east coast language! ;)
If you go into any grocery store you will see ALL containers of sherbet Spelled S-H-E-R-B-E-T...after a debate, I had to see if there was a brand out there that spelled it Sherbert...NOPE...I understand why I pronounce it Sher-BET, but I have yet to find the Phonics rule where we pronounce an invisible "R"...Just Saying...
They are indeed different things! One of them has dairy in it, though I can't remember which at the moment. That's not the important part, so I'm not too concerned at the moment. ;]

If I had seen "sherbet" on the containers as a child I would be saying it sher-bet today. heee

And yeah, the reason I don't pronounce it "sher-bert" is because that's not how I'd seen it spelt.
