This came up yesterday while I was at Yale, and I'm really curious if I'm the only one who pronounces this word the way I do, as seems to be the case after yesterday's conversation...
I teach literacy, and today I had to set a task about sherbet lemons. had to stop and think about the spelling, asked my boss, we both decided it was sherbert and I wrote it in only to find it came up as a spelling mistake. This is why I have looked on this site. Did not realise it was such a big thing! Angie
I don't know that it's actually such a big thing--but I'm a stickler for correctness, so I made it a big thing. ;) I'm sure it won't be long before "sherbert" is considered not only an alternate spelling, but the primary correct spelling and pronunciation!
Hey about the name

If it helps you any, I can say that the American word "sherbet" has roots in the French word "sorbet." Maybe that tip will send you down a path that helps with your name history research. :)
