I own seriously every movie you just mentioned. Except Divine Trash. I like Garbo's silent work more than her talkies, but I highly suggest Ninotchka. It's a comedy (a rarity for her).
Haha, that's incredible. I definitely can't wait to see her in talkies but I want to finish off the silents first. Just because I like going in the order of things, in this case chronological. Why Change Your Wife? came with another movie directed by Cecil's brother called Miss Lulu Bett. And Aziza, I have to ask you, why did this DVD cost me $25? Would you say it was worth it?
Ah, we have the same DVD. I love Cecil's brother, William. I bought this book off of ebay that he wrote and it's full of fantastic anecdotes about his brother and the Paramount stars and just Hollywood at the time. Such a find, I swear.
As for the price, the typical high quality restoration is about $20-$30 (maybe more if its multiple disks). When it comes to these movies, I pretty much expect to pay this much. It's not really cheap to find the best prints and restore them (which all these films need at some point), so this process is usually paid through project loans and the consumer (us!). Tons of the discount versions of these films are like $5 and still not worth the money (awful, contrasted 16 mm reduction prints). I don't buy a lot of movies because it can be pricey, but I think waiting to buy the best version is more important. That's the movie buff in me though.
If you haven't heard Garbo's voice you'll be pretty suprised the first time you hear it. It definitely had to grow on me.
Ah, wow. Thank you for that information, it makes a lot more sense to me now.
As for Garbo, I was looking at videos of her on YouTube and I only sort of heard sprinkles of her voice here and there. Though I haven't heard enough to judge, I remember kind of being disappointed. From what little I've seen, I definitely prefer her in the silents. In fact, to be quite honest, I'm beginning to get really excited about silent movies because they seem much more entertaining to me than the classic talkies or even modern talkies. I hadn't seen many before, all I've seen is Nosferatu, over half of Wings and half of this Flesh and the Devil but I feel like that's enough. I also watched a documentary on Mary Pickford and just the clips they showed... especially one really emotional moment from Little Annie Rooney almost made me cry. Have you ever seen that one?
