Taylor parked her car up on the front lawn of the apartment and shoved her keys in the pocket of her long knitted coat as she got out and slammed the door. She pushed her unruly blonde curls back out of her face as she hurried up the path, but before she reached the front door, it opened and Jason appeared with Tim just behind him. She stopped as their gaze met and bit down on her lip. She hesitantly breached the gap, stuffing her hands into her pockets. “I-I just couldn’t wait any longer to see ya’, darlin’…” she told him nervously. “I should never have run away in the first place and I’m so sorry. I just had t’come.”

Jason shook his head. “No, it’s okay. I was just… I was just coming to see you,” he assured her and reached out to touch her arm. “Are you okay?”

Tim weaved his way around Jason’s chair and stepped out onto the front lawn. “Yeah, I’m gonna go do shit… somewhere else… not here. Catch yas.” He was about as subtle as knee in the nuts, but so what? Thank fuck Mac and Six were at least in hearing distance of each other. He could go bug Sam at work for awhile so they could do the talk thing. He was going to drive Jason to Mac’s anyway, so it was all good. Fate had stepped in and saved him a drive to the other side of Dillon. He was in his truck and zooming off down the street before either of them even probably realised.

Taylor laughed a little, becoming teary again just from the question. She took some Kleenex from her pocket and wiped at her eyes before it became another all out sob-fest. “I-I don’t really know,” she admitted honestly. “Better now that I can see ya’. I’ve been such an ass and I’m kinda scared here right now that I’ve lost ya’.”

Jason reached for her hand and tugged on it a little. “Come inside. You don’t need to be standing out here like a stranger. Do you want a cup of tea? Juice?” he offered as he backed up into the front hall of the apartment.

“Tea,” Taylor decided as she followed him in. She got the door and closed it behind them. Her stomach was in knots from what might come out of his mouth, but at least he didn’t seem angry and he wasn’t telling her to get lost. “I’ll help ya’. I just need it kinda weak right now or we could have a disaster on our hands.”

Jason flicked the kettle on in the kitchen and turned to face her when she came up next to him. “We’ll deal with it,” he promised her, putting his hands on her waist. “I know we’ve got stuff to talk about, babe, but I don’t want you stressing out, okay? Whatever is going on, you’ve just gotta be careful. Mac, you just… it really shocked me. I thought after everything with Noah that it was just inevitable. I couldn’t have kids, you know? I’d resigned myself to that. When you told me you were pregnant, I was just angry. But not angry at you. Angry because I thought it was happening all over again and I’m not sure I have the energy to cope with a second round.”

Taylor dropped her head a little and her hair fell into her face. She let out a slow breath and then met his eyes again. “The baby’s yours, Jason. I’m not fuckin’ ya’ over here. That’s the last thing in this world I would do right before killin’ myself. I would never, ever dream of compoundin’ on all the pain you’ve already been through, but I have by default and I’m so sorry. But this has shocked me just as much as it has shocked ya’. I was on the pill and I was okay with the fact ya’ might not be able t’have kids. I was gonna tell ya’ that. I really was. We just didn’t get the chance and next thing I know, I’m realisin’ that maybe it’s too late. And it was. I ain’t been with any other guys in about eight months, darlin’. Not one. Ya’ were the first in a long time. I was on medication… antibiotics… to reduce the risk of infection after the stabbin’. I had just finished takin’ them when we first had sex. We did it a coupla times those first few days. Sure, we weren’t always successful, but we were successful enough and successful enough without a condom because I was on the pill, only I was stupid. I just didn’t think. I was so wrapped up in ya’ I just got swept away in the amazin’ feelin’ of it all and the amazin’ feelin’ of bein’ with ya’ finally. Whatever workin’ sperm ya’ have in there must be mighty fine determined lil swimmers. I ain’t surprised considerin’ who’s producin’ them and all.” She patted her stomach a little. “QB Six sperm is like turbo-charged or somethin’ ‘cause one got through… and now we gotta a lil issue t’try and deal with here. Hopefully t’gether because I ain’t wantin’ t’lose ya’, QB. You’ve become my everythin’.”

The kettle clicked off when it boiled, but Jason was oblivious to it. He wet his lips and swallowed as he looked up at her. “It’s really mine?” he asked in a small voice, moving the palm of his hand from her waist to her stomach. “A-Are you sure?”

Taylor nodded with a faint smile, looking down at his hand. “Yeah, it really is, darlin’. Unless ya’ really can get pregnant from sittin’ on a toilet seat.” She sucked in a small, shaky breath. “And I know ya’ were tryin’ t’propose t’me when I dumped all this on ya’ and I’m so sorry I ruined it for ya’. If I could turn the time back and change it all, I would. I woulda told ya’ the minute I found out rather than selfishly worryin’ myself stupid that ya’ were just gonna think that maybe I cheated on ya’. I could never do that, QB. Ya’ gotta understand that I’ve wanted ya’ f’ages. Plus, my job was always really important t’me so I didn’t have a lot of time f’guys. There’s only really been a couple in my time. None ever made me feel like ya’ do. I’m just… really, really sorry I ruined it all f’ya’ ‘cause I know that when a guy decides somethin’ like that, it ain’t nothin’ small and I know ya’. I know ya’ wouldn’t have wanted t’do that just ‘cause it sounded like fun.”

Jason shook his head, looking up at her intently again. “Would you have said yes?” he murmured.

“Jason…” Taylor said, letting out a rush of breath. She touched his head and brushed her fingers through his hair. “In a heartbeat,” she whispered.

The ring had ended up back in Jason’s jacket pocket somewhere along the way in his brooding. The thing had suffered being dropped in the dirt and thrown against a wall, but Sam had saved it and left it sitting on coffee table when she left for work so Jason could have it back if he wanted it. She knew him too well. She had brushed all the dirt of the exterior of the box too, but inside, the ring had survived the trauma… much like Jason himself. He still loved it. It had been the first one he was drawn to and he hadn’t looked back since. He had doubted over the last few hours it was even going to have a purpose, but now, as he took the box from his pocket and opened it up with a smile, it felt even more right than when he had tried this the previous times. He took Taylor’s hand into his, feeling her fingers link warmly with his own. “Marry me?” he asked, holding the box up.

Tears spilt down Taylor’s cheeks and she put her other hand up to her lips. But she laughed, looking down at him in awe. She had laid it all on the line to him and he wasn’t telling her to get lost. He was asking her to stay. Forever. “Yes!” she cried with a happy sob. “Yes, I’ll marry ya’!” She leaned over and caught her lips with his in a deep kiss with enough force that would probably bruise his lips.

When the kiss tapered off and she pulled back just a little, Jason couldn’t help laughing a little too. But the shock was setting in and he put the ring box on the counter so he could tuck his hands around hers. “So, is this it? We’re going to get married and have the baby? Together?” he asked, still a little scared to get his hopes up about anything. It all seemed so surreal and he figured they could only just take each day until the penny really dropped.

“Is that what ya’ want?” Taylor asked with a nervous swallow. She rested her forehead against his, holding his gaze. “Is that what ya’ really want, darlin’?” she asked seriously.

“More than anything,” Jason admitted without hesitation.

A smile flicked on Taylor’s lips. “Then we’re doin’ it,” she promised and pressed her lips softly against his and this time, they both let the kiss linger.
