I think we're so materialistic that it's hard to fathom a fulfilled/satisfied life without extra possessions to show successes.
so NOT everything. just obviously unnecessary things like multiple HUMMERS and a bank of a substantial amount of money that is not benefiting anyone.
It's good to be selfless, though often those who conduct selfless deeds are actually doing it selfishly (thinking "wow, i did something selfless so my self image is good!")
uh...to answer the question, we're morally responsible to help those in need, but not give up what makes us as western individuals happy.
we should switch papers topics, it's so easy for me to spew philosophy rather than analyze a movie on body modification and integrate quotes from random, excrutiatingly long papers about being INDIVIDUALS and being DIFFERENT and SOCIETY
