You might consider a trail camera. They're IR/motion activated and can also work in the dark. I don't think they're too expensive.

I have thought about a trail camera, bt, for one fox? If I lived in a more rural area with other wildlife likely to appear I would probably et one.

Time lapse app for your phone? That would lengthen the record time.
