Pop music meme thing

So here's how this round of LJ silliness goes: go to www.popCulturemadness.com and select the year you became 18. Paste the list of the top 75 songs. Bold the ones you liked; strike the ones you disliked; and italicize the ones you know but don't exactly like nor dislike. The ones you don't know will stay common text.

the list is long and painful )

same age...

and YIPES.
what the hell is with the music?
and wasn't this when we started to get really angry with R.E.M. for writing shitall songs?

and I can't believe Radiohead was cranking out a great song while the fucking Proclaimers were on the charts???

(oh and I do have to disagree with you on Salt N Pepa... not gonna lie, loved em. have the cd. you can borrow it...)

I will go with Salt N Pepa as far as "Push It," but I am simply not having "Shoop."

Belly! I had totally forgotten.

I started to do this today and 1. somehow had difficulty figuring out in which year I turned 18 (yikes!) and 2. in the process, realized how much difference a few years makes in terms of some familiarity with these songs. I.e. when I mistakenly thought I turned 18 in 1990, I knew a good majority of the songs, for your year I know, well a few more than you do, and then for my year I know I think about the same proportion as you? Maybe even less.

How can you not know Bad Boys by Inner Circle? It's the COPS song! Uf, Ace of Base! The Proclaimers song! Songs I did not need to remember.

Then I guess I need to cross out Bad Boys by Inner Circle. Shit, what a disaster.

And seriously, what the hell is the Captain Hollywood Project?!?! Is that for real?

I just did this exercise for '93 and basically crossed out everything except for Ace of Base and Radiohead. There was a lot of crap around that I'd forgotten about.

(In unrelated news that Proclaimers song... I thought that had a refrain involving a pterodactyl for quite some time. I guess I don't hear well.)

Yeah, the thing about the songs I bolded is that at best, I thought they were: ok but nothing to be excited about (Radiohead, Belly); cloyingly catchy (Naughty by Nature); or fall-down funny (95 South and Tag Team (Petree had this song on cassingle, incidentally)). Not a one of them was a song I really thought was any good.

I cannot believe that you crossed out Meatloaf. I can't talk to you anymore.

If I'll Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That) is the line in the sand you want to draw, there's nothing I can do about it. Enjoy yourself with the worst schmaltz of the decade.
