Oops, this came out as Naomi+Dan with implied R+C. Is that okay, or would you like another fill?

“Today she came home begging me to teach her how to “make those teeny-tiny braids” because her best friend has them and they want to braid each other’s hair - whatever happened to good old-fashioned bangs?”
“Oh, come on, Naomi, she’s in third grade, not kindergarten - and besides, you can’t spare a few minutes to do your daughter’s hair?”
“All right, Dan, you try braiding her hair in the morning - because I guarantee you there is no way she can get that done in fifteen minutes - in between waking Rachel up before 8:30, getting Jordan ready for preschool and freaking out about your 9 o’clock briefing.”

...Oh Lord, now I'm dying to see Dan trying and failing to braid Rachel's hair just to prove Naomi wrong lol.

Fill (sequel) with_rainfall July 12 2012, 20:16:29 UTC
"Rachel, honey, stay still - Daddy has to leave for work," said Dan, twisting tiny locks of her hair into increasing disarray, and then sticking hairpins in every which way in vain hopes of rescuing the tangles.
"But Daddy, it hurts when you pull it," protested Rachel, squirming under his grip with all the energy of a small hurricane.
Dan gave up, grabbing the glittery red barrettes from the side table and handing them mutely to his daughter, who stared at him reproachfully; he tried not to imagine Naomi's reaction.

LOVE IT. Thank you so much for going back and doing this :D I can totally *picture* this in my head - especially mini-Rach disappointed pout lol.

*post-series Dan + Rachel heartbreak*

She settles up against my shins, shoulder blades pressing at my knees, and hands me the brush. "You know how to braid, right?" she says, teasing, and I roll my eyes and say, "I did have long hair in elementary school, you know," as I take the thick golden rope and carefully comb it into three. It's girly and pointless and she'll probably undo it to shower later, but there is inane chatter between us -- about normal things, homework and weekend plans and boys, instead of morphing and missions and aliens -- as I twist the silky strands into a neat braid, and when I loop the tie around the end of it we almost, for a moment, feel normal again.

OMG so much delicious not angsty fluffy normality! ♥ (Don't see that nearly enough with these two IMO.)

There is not nearly enough fic of just these two to begin with. Probably because for best friends they really don't spend all that much time alone together in canon, either. :(

Part of me has always wondered if R+C was a relationship that didn't get thought/planned out as much before the start of the series, as opposed to J+M or T+A. (That or maybe KAA didn't have a really close friendship specifically with one girl in particular at the age so she wasn't quite sure how to write them?) I think due to my overwhelming Rachel bias my overall impression of Cassie soured as the series progressed in a lot of ways because of how their friendship was dropped/dissolved so quickly.

But you're totally right about there needing to be more fic!

Grah <333 I adore these two so much. They and Ax+Tobias are my two favourite pairings in the series.

Also, hell to the yes about the lack of R+C fic in fandom. It always bugs me how the extent of these two in canon was "bonding over shopping and being total opposites". I mean, really, KA?

None of the others' friendships were explored very extensively, not even J+M... but I can forgive them for that, considering it'd be hard to D&M in the middle of a mission. And, well, kids and publishers wanted to keep the focus on the Animorphs fighting Yeerks, so explorations of friendship took a back seat.

Platonic bromances are always the best.

I know! Marco and Jake at least got some fun banter and occasional emotional support. Rachel and Cassie is just like, "Here, Cassie, wear this." "But!" "Jake." "Okay."

Best summation ever.

That's an amusing but sadly accurate summary of their friendship.
