Ozorne slams the cage shut and locks it with shaking hands, snapping his fingers and burnishing the metal reinforcements with green light. Holding in a hiss of pain- there are slaves here, never show pain in front of anyone- he brushes his fingers down his cheek, where four long claw marks are leaking blood onto his spun-gold robes and the mosaic floor. With a muttered spell, he seals the skin over the wounds, but the ache is still there. He takes a final look at the naked girl on the floor of the enclosure. “I would have given you such a wonderful life,” he murmurs, face blank. Then he turns in his soft shoes and leaves, instructing the trainer at the wall of the menagerie that the exhibit should be reopened. The immortals cry and shriek as he walks away, and Ozorne smiles.
Tortall, Daine + author's choice, "Lookit the wild girl, dearie - doesn't she almost seem human?"
