“Not that I want to be overrun by witches or talking scarecrows or anything,” she explained to Sol, her cat-that-wasn't-a-cat, “but don’t you think it’s strange that there hasn’t been any activity?”
Sol paused the act of licking her back leg and blinked luminous green eyes. A chat window opened on Trixie’s laptop.
The pause that refreshes.
Trixie frowned. The cat sometimes sounded like a television commercial when she communicated with words.
“I don’t know why I bother talking to you. Although if I’m looking for weird, here it is sitting on my desk.”
Incomprehensible. Not weird.Sol flicked the inky tip of her tail, the only part of her that wasn’t tawny brown, and went back to grooming ( ... )

Trixie doubted that very much, but Jupiter wasn’t an overtly emotional man. He merely squeezed her hand.

Trixie gave a startled squeal and whirled around, flashlight waving wildly until it landed on a book that had fallen off the bookshelf.
“How did that happen?”
She picked up the book, which was covered in dust everywhere it had been exposed to the room. “Encyclopedia Brown’s Record Book of Weird and Wonderful Facts,” she said, reading the title ( ... )
