"You and that Macher boy," Dad says one night at dinner during sophomore year, "you're getting a bit close, don't you think?"
Billy glances up, but Mom is looking at her plate, just moving peas around, while Dad tips more beer into his glass.
It's like Billy didn't catch him and his mistress of the month in the laundry room last week. Like Billy didn't recognize the bitch as Mrs. Prescott, sweet little Sidney's mom. Like Billy and Mom don't know Dad's been drunk since late afternoon, when court let out and he went to the bar with the boys.
"You need a girlfriend," Dad tells him and it's all Billy can do not to throw the plate of meatloaf in his face.

The thing about Stu is, Billy doesn't need to think around him, to decide what face to put on, to watch his words so he never crosses a line. With Stu, there is no line. They can bounce ideas off each other, sit in silence, spend hours together doing nothing at all, except the nothing is everything. Billy can't remember a time before him ( ... )
