When he was a kid, before he had to shuffle from one side of the country to another, living with distant relatives who obviously didn't care about him, he never imagined growing up. He always had books, toys, daydreams and fantasies, and none of them included becoming an adult.
Then the yeerks. Morphing. Fighting. Trapped as a bird, until he realizes the bird is freedom and it was as a boy he was trapped. And he knew, he knew in every one of his hollow bones, he would not survive the war.
Except... he does survive. He has to live in this world he helped save and know that Rachel doesn't get to see the end. Rachel will never grow older, will never breathe and laugh and fly again, and this end is not how it should've been.
But this is what he has, now, after the war. He has to live knowing Rachel didn't, and he has to fly, knowing Rachel never will again.
