I slept! Okay well I admit I slept because I had a tamazipan (or however it’s spelt) tablet which knocked me out for seven full hours but SEVEN FULL HOURS! WOO HOO! I feel - well - tired really but tired is better than yesterday when I felt like something akin to the living dead at times. I *may* get some of Thursday or Friday off as well as the ( Read more... )

I noticed 'thirty helens agree', and was impressed as I didn't think "Kids in the Hall" was known in England (at least I mentioned it to Andrew once and he was confused, and I figured it was the kind of thing he'd like if he knew about it, so he must not ... I admit this isn't a very scientific way of going about this sort of thing but it seems to work for me!). So it makes sense, then, that you brought it over from the states. :-) KitH used to be on at random times of the day and I would always watch it if I was around because I thought it was a great show. And practically no one I knew had even heard of it. Then it stopped being on TV again, so i probably haven't thought of it in the past few years. I may have to get one of those box sets some day...

You're just making me want more DVDs!

it was on just after the repeats of the prisoner in the early nineties tell him. say "i crush your head" to him and it may come back as that took off quite a bit even at our noticeably traditional school. there's a british series by the father ted writers called "big train" (imminent on dvd) which is very similar in tone - lots of sketches like the devil working in an office, goose assasinations etc - which he will be aware of. and "brain candy" was released over here but - um - probably isn't very representative (as it's not very good as you probably know ( ... )

I think it was actually the "I'm squishing your head" thing that made me ask him if he knew what I was talking about, because that's something I'll say from time to time. :-) And you're right, it is great. Not everything works, of course, but the things that do are enough to keep me happy. I especially like that "I shot a man ... " one myself.

I do know that Andrew is aware of the MST3K goodness he's missing here, because he saw that when he was in the states. And that is, in fact, another show that I used to see on cable that stopped being shown a couple of years ago. They're just asking me to buy the DVDs of these things. Sigh. See, I'm easily temptable; don't worry about it.

well if we did meet up i can bring MST3K *AND* "kids in the hall" with us - though be warned, me and sarah are passionate joel fans rather than mike people - so that can be arranged. i'm kind of pleased there's just so much MST3K to catch up on - it'll be some time before i see most of them

did you ever see the "squish/ squidge" your head duel? that one was particularly wonderful

I'm assuming you are looking for a PC laptop. If so, the Dell Inspiron 600m is supposed to be extremely durable and stable. It runs about $1300US and up depending on what add-ons you get. The standard 1.5 GHz Pentium M should be plenty fast for what you'll be doing. I would get 512MB total of RAM though.

Toshiba P20-25 series are a tad more, but they sport a 17" screen and a really slick look.

Then again, if you want to be really cool and go for an Apple, the 15" Powerbook G4s absolutely rule (that's what I have). If you buy the "day old" models from 3rd party dealers, you save a lot. My favorite dealer for Apple stuff is Small Dog, though you should probably check Deal-Mac for other specials. Small Dog has a killer TiBook now for only $1549US.

Hope this helps!

oooh crikey! NONE of that makes a word of sense to me (i have a very functional attitude to technology. it does a job and i'm happy with that and don't understand anything more about it) but sounds like some good leads - thank you for these! shall be followed up over the next few weeks!

oh i know that the laptop won't improve the computer, but i think it would be a reasonable investment - almost every other week this year i'll be heading to winchester and so can write stuff on the train and sarah can use it etc etc. then once the pressure is off this computer i can work on trying to restore it to a decent condition. but it's been used far too much over the last couple of years and is showing the strain, bless it...

i shall look up those links, though bear in mind i know less than NOTHING about computers...

well i'm not going to be using it the whole journey down to winchester - hell, i live in lincoln let's not forget so i'll have to do countless changes, but the longest straight patch of journey i'd like to be able to do something when i'm travelling so much

i shall take all these into consideration and print them off and go through them with the much more practically minded housemate. i have no idea about these things - i mean he practically bought this computer for me, so i have no quibbles with his guiding hand...
