you have no idea how much i'd love to be doctor browning of cinema. there are not *words* - i just worry whether i'd be capable of it...

From what I've seen (from the outside looking in), the worst trouble with PhDs comes from either a badly chosen thesis topic, or a bad supervisor (or both). If you could avoid those, I'm sure you'd be more than capable.

i already know what i'd love to study - i'd love to do something on cinemas as buildings in britain, the boom period of the thirties where they were ludicrously overblown and glamorous as that area fascinates me. i'm just not sure i'm - well - bright or articulate enough sadly

hmm - problem is i want to move south to be nearer sarah and i think nottingham trent won't want to move south with me. so you reckon i should plug away at the PGCE route and then once in an HE job go for the phd that way?

no no that's entirely the answer i wanted to hear - thank you! you make sense... your opinions probably matter more than anyone else as you've BEEN THROUGH this. would i be capable of a phd though? i do wonder whether i'd be intellectually up to it sometimes...
