Tea Party!

Feb 05, 2008 11:42

My daughter's birthday is fast approaching. She's invited two friends to join her at a local spa/salon where they will each get mini manicures, light application make-up, and party hair-do's. Afterwards I really won't be able to afford to take them anywhere else, but I'd like to have something fun for them to do ( Read more... )

Wow, I just have to say that I think this sounds like a wonderful idea! I would have loved to have a tea-party like this when I was 9 years old. And I definitely think you should serve scones, who doesn't love that? :)

Awww, thanks.

I think I will look for some yummy scones to make or buy. Now that I think of it, my daughter was asking me just a few weeks ago what scones taste like. A tea party for her birthday seems like the perfect occasion for her to try them out.

Thanks for the comment. :)

A friend of mine recently made these for a tea party we had, and they were AMAZING with some clotted cream and jam. Super easy recipe, too! (recipe from danijo11 cup self-raising flour ( ... )

Hmmm...I never knew scones were so easy to make. And I imagine I could improvise and add different spices, fruit, or savory ingredients.

Question: Is caster sugar the same as powdered sugar? I don't recall ever seeing caster sugar in the grocery stores in this area - could I use powdered sugar instead or should I look for caster sugar in a specialty/baking supplies shop?

Thank you!

i thnk a formal tea (complete with finger sandwiches and devonshire cream) would be a wonderful idea and very much not over the top for 9 year olds. they'll eat it up! (no pun intended, lol)

I've recevied several suggestions from another tea community I belong to. I must say, this tea party is shaping up very nicely and I just know the little girls are going to love it. :)

I'm so excited, I can't wait to throw this little party for my daughter!

That's a fantastic idea! Scones are super-easy to make. Here's a nice basic cranberry recipe: http://www.recipezaar.com/13067. Mini-muffins might also be nice. If you'd like to introduce the girls to cucumber sandwiches, but want it to be a little closer to what they normally eat, you can add a mild cheese. And I can't imagine even small children not enjoying clotted cream and lemon curd. I would go with a cake rather than cupcakes, unless you happen to have fun mini-cake molds. (I have mini molds with flower patterns.)

Thanks for the recipe.

I think for the cucumber sandwiches I'm going to make them on wheat with savory cream cheese. If the girls don't like the cucumber sandwiches I can always eat the leftovers for lunch the next day. ;)

As far as the lemon curd - someone on another list suggested lemon curd & raspberry tartlets. Mmmmmm!

My 5 year old niece went crazy over the honey and peanut butter finger sandwiches I made for her mother's baby shower. She also very much liked the scones with jam. She tried salmon, but spit that out, and picked the cucumbers off. But that's kids for you!

Definitely a cake! Oh, I'm just thinking of the American Girls Samantha's Party book. She had a tea party for her birthday. I'm such a sucker for Victorian Romance...

My daughter loves American Girl stories, and we've read the one you are speaking of several times. Hopefully though, the children at my daughter's tea party will be a bit more well-behaved than Samantha's bratty neighbor!
