Valerian is one of the herbal remedies that has no side-effects that I'm aware of; I use it quite often. Also free of side-effects would be a blend of 40 grams of chamomile blossoms, 40 grams of willow bark and 20 grams of hawthorn (crataegus) blossoms. Use a teaspoonful per cup and drink it about a half hour before bedtime.
A stronger blend but also without side-effects is 30 grams of valerian root, 25 grams of passionflower, 25 grams of willow blossoms, 30 grams of hops (the buds), 30 grams of lemon balm (leaves) and 50 grams of chamomile blossoms. Prepare it like the first mixture but drink a cup before dinner and one before bedtime.
A blend of 20 grams of bitterorange leaves, 30 grams of valerian root and 20 grams of lavender blossoms, four teaspoons to a quart of water and drunk after every meal, can help tension headaches. A good pharmacy might be able to order the herbs and even mix them for you, if not I'd check places like health-food stores. Hope this helps! :)
I make a wonderful calming tea from chamomile, oatstraw, oat tops, skullcap, and valerian. They're all known for they're relaxing qualities. I also have another one I make out of lemongrass, lemon balm, lemon verbena, and mint. That one is also relaxing but not in the same way as the other one, which is more sedative. You can get all of those herbs from a decent natural store or online: I recommend www.mountainroseherbs.com
