I usually end up with lots of expired tea too, because I typically have 30 or so types of tea on hand. Anyways some teas are fine after expiry, most of the time it just makes them weaker and/or the oils start to dry up. Some expired tea is fine as is, some I double the bags, and others just aren't any good past date.
For me a test would be having a cup and coming up with a verdict. If it just doesn't taste good anymore I'd do what teamtriceratops suggested and take a bath in it.
Aside from trying it, take a big whiff. If it doesn't smell like tea, it's stale. It wouldn't hurt you, and some teas may be good past their expiration date if they're well stored. They won't be AS good, but they'll still have some flavor.
I'm glad you compost, but if you feel bad, aside from taking a bath, tea has a myriad of other uses. Staining things, putting it on your eyes...I'm sure you just google for ideas of what to do with it besides drink it.

I'd really only use decaf though to avoid problems with porous over-consumption of caffeine.
I did this during the bar exam and it was amazing.
