so, it's pretty clear that i'm a huge nerd so it comes with no surprise that i would have picked the latest "version" (i.e. - money grab) of dungeons and dragons. and while it's taken some unusual for d&d version mind twists, i think i'm comfortable with the new system. i'm not certain it's the best system to date or anything like that and i can't ( Read more... )

oooh. haven't thought about that.

on second thought, they'd all just play rogues and it wouldn't be fun at all.

I have pretty much no clue on what d&d is...well, some clue I guess, BUT NOT MUCH OF ONE.

I guess I should listen to that podcast huh? Grrr, I wish I still had my zune so I could listen to it on the bus!

my dm has forbidden us to listen to that podcast, as it apparently contains spoilers for "keep on the shadowfell" which we're currently 3 sessions into. i'm currently having an awesome time playing a half-elf rogue, but am reserving judgment for a bit on whether i think the new version emphasizes quick sexy combat to the detriment of decently constructed plots with heavy roleplay. (if i were to call it "dumb(er) d&d," it'd be because of the shift towards "shut up and get to the combat.") so far combat isn't going any faster, as we had thought it would, but it is more fun. and yes, i'm pretty much enjoying not having to remember 5,000,000 different skills and stats. powers are cool.

while i miss the skill: cooking, i won't miss having to pick up blind-fighting or rope use. the podcast skips a lot of 'keep' content since it's made for five people and they only have two, but yeah i wouldn't listen to it until after you finish. do listen to it though when you're cleared to do so, it's fucking tight.

if you look at the other d&d podcast, not from the penny arcade guys, watch the paragon adventure one. it was really interesting.

oh, in your experience, how often do you burn up healing surges? is it almost every fight kind of thing or do you really have to conserve them?

almost every fight. we had three encounters on our first adventure-day, which is all we've played so far, and everyone burned through about half to two-thirds of their healing surges in that day.

conserving them isn't an option - bad guys are beefed up in 4th ed, with the exception of minions. we got worked over by a couple teams of kobolds. one is frequently faced with either using a healing surge or keeling over.

we do have a cleric in the party, btw. but that just enables you to use a healing surge in combat, with a few bonus HP added.

so... not only will it keep track of your powers, and what you have left at at-will, encounter and daily... but when it's time to level up, you can get an idea of summary stats on how often you used each one?

that is sufficiently awesome that i may have to get over my fear that someone is going to spill margarita on my laptop, and keep it open during games.
