I totally agree with that. And the argument that "not everyone has access to competition" is totally fair. I myself do not have access to any other provider other than COX, which to their credit has been very good. If they chose to become part of a tiered network, then I would be screwed. HOWEVER, I also believe that if that were to happen, do not bet for a second that an open network wouldn't rise in it's place.
The one big factor that has changed in the last 10-20 years is the price to pay for technology, and the price to play for networking. Do some research into Hajinets :) Here, you have American soldiers who OUT OF POCKET are setting up their own totally independant ISP's to the 'net backbone. Pretty nifty.
