Wow, I can't believe that the National Zoo let a reptile go like that. I mean, I feel bad when the bowl is empty in one of my lizard's cages for a day or so, (little bowls evaporate super fast under a heat lamp), and mine can go for 1-2 months without water.
Asian Water Dragons can definitely go a couple weeks without water with no real harm. However, that being said, if it was on it's back with it's feet in the air, it was dead. I have never seen any of my lizards on their back for more than about 0.5 seconds at a time. When they are, it's generally because they tried to do something spastic and fell backwards.
Asian Water Dragons are sold in pet shops to anyone with enough money to purchase one. They're not exceptionally hard reptiles to maintain. The zoo should be ashamed of themselves if they can't give them proper care when it takes a regular person about a dollar and 10 minutes a day to take care of one.
BTW, my leopard geckos are laying. I'm totally looking forward to having cute little gecko babies.
i don't even care about embarrasment. i want someone nailed to the wall for it. i'm not kidding. somebody is going to lose a few paychecks because something lost its life.
