I have had a very strange last two days, most of which unfortunately has been negative. Yesterday, Monday, my mom called me at work to tell me that my brother had fallen off of the trampoline where she was working (at a friends house who is also one of her clients). She was on her way to taking him to the emergency room and needed me to go and call

Wow. That sounds really rough. It sounds like you and your mom have been doing what you need to to take care of Paul when he needs it. You're a great big sister. Hope you have a happy new year, despite everything.
