My day in prison

So, today was my field trip to San Quentin State Prison for my hip hop culture class. Wow, that's intense. I still think there's something wrong with assuming that hip-hop and prisons are linked, even though I guess a lot of the songs are about crime. I can't believe they said they wouldn't negotiate if one of you was hostaged! That can't have made the trip easier. What were the inmates like?

I know I agree about assuming hip-hop and prisons are linked. I mean, yes there is a history of rappers and the like being in jail and prison, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Yes, being warned that if taken hostage they would not negotiate was a scary thought(especially being a girl and knowing that they would most likely kidnap a girl before they would a guy) but it was somewhat comforting when they said there hasn't been a hostage situation for quite a few years (I can't remember how long ago he said).

Mostly the inmates just wanted to talk like any normal person who doesn't get much human contact would want to. There were some rude comments and some whistles, etc when walking by but for the most part they were pretty respectful. It was a weird feeling having hundreds of eyes on you (again, especially being a girl) not knowing what was going through their minds. I tried not to make eye contact with any of the guys, but it was unavoidable at times.
