OOC: The Abilities

Sep 14, 1990 00:45

Feel free to ask questions that you feel this guide doesn't cover as well. This is to help people understand things a little better; because I understand that Nina can sometimes come off as almighty or something. Many of Nina's traits come from her heritage as a Bremelith (even if she doesn't consider herself to be one) and you can read up on them on this incomplete wiki.

Natural Abilities
T5-level Telekinesis
Nina can basically manipulate things within about three meters of her body using her thoughts. This is to say that she can move objects with her mind and other things like that. It's not a matter of magic so much as moving around and manipulating what is already there. Nina doesn't require any incantation or focus for this, but will sometimes reach out a hand or something to help her focus it.

If she is touching an object, she can also do a rudimentary manipulation of its molecular structure, but as this ability is difficult for her at best (being only T5) in canon, in Luceti it would more than likely cause her to have a brain hemorrhage if it was something that she wasn't very used to doing. The only time she will likely ever use this ability (aside from the manipulation of her sword, see Voidblade below) is a neat little trick she likes to do in causing air around her to combust at a specific point, usually to light up a cigarette or something.

Perfect Class Morphic Ability
As a Bremelith, Nina is able to change her appearance, species, gender, voice, and indeed anything about her body at will. She can also change her internal and external composition as well as manipulate specific parts of her body to grow things like say claws or wings or gills; you name it. While in-universe as well as in Luceti she'll spend most of her time as a human, she does not consider this nor Bremelith to her her species; which is important to remember.

This ability, while simple in concept, afford Nina a wide array of creativity in how she uses it. Because she can manipulate what's inside of her, she can grant herself at least a temporary immunity to almost any toxin by changing body chemistry. This also means she can transform specific cells in her body to those of a species with a faster regenerating rate, grow armor plating, or almost anything you can imagine while keeping her strictly biological. It is worth noting that while the general mass of her body must remain the same (while she can convert surrounding molecules into something usable for her body, this takes some fierce amount of time in Luceti) she is not limited strictly to a humanoid form. Because she can also change the design of her vocal cords, she can change her voice as well.

The only notably limitations to this ability are as follows: Because he ability is strictly limited to the manipulation of her own cells, she cannot regrow parts of her body which have been entirely removed (like say, regrowing an arm) without it being a lengthy process in which she is converting cells from other locations into bones and needed tissue. This isn't to say it's impossible, merely that it is something which would take her more like days or weeks than something which would take her minutes or hours. Additionally,in any given morph her proportional muscle mass remains the same. That is to say, if she's stronger, it's because the species she is has harder skin or more efficient muscles or something like that, as opposed to her merely changing the tone of her body at will.

In Luceti there's the additional limit that she can't change her Luceti wings at all. They're always in the same spot and always red. It really, really bugs her a lot, honestly.

Perfect Memory:
Ironically, in light of her numerous memory issues when it comes to long-term memory, Nina's heritage affords her an often overlooked ability called a Perfect Memory. That is to say, in relation to sights, smells, sounds, or any other sensual memory there, if she has felt it before somehow, she can instantly make the association. For example, if she comes across a smell she has smelled before, she can instantly recall when and where that was. This also means that if she is capable of recalling a moment from her past, she is capable of recalling all the sights, sounds, smells and anything else she felt at the time of that memory.

However, as mentioned elsewhere, Nina has numerous long-term memory issues. She cannot recall many things which have happened to her in the past at all and this trait does not help her in making those recollections. Her "age" (coupled with the fact she is technically a clone) does not allow her to recall large parts of her life clearly at all.

Touch-Based Analysis
A native ability of all Bremelith is that when one makes skin-to-skin contact with someone she can gain an instant and innate understanding of how their body works. The organs, the blood stream, the cells, the everything. By touching an organism, Nina basically adds parts of their body or their body as a whole to the list of species or traits she can morph into. It is worth noting, however, that while this understanding is complete, it is more of a reflex than it is a scientific knowledge. If asked about the chemical composition of a certain organism, for example, she would not know it offhand (unless, of course, she knew it from studying) but she would be able to change her body's structure to 100% match that organism anyway.

Detoxing
This is less of an ability on it's own than it is an extension of her morphic abilities. as mentioned above, Nina can change her internal body chemistry. What this means is that by messing around with her organs and bloodstream and such she is capable of rendering herself immune to most toxins or otherwise "pumping things out of her system" relatively quickly if she should want to. However, because manipulation of her innards requires concentration on her part, she cannot falls asleep or loose consciousness during this process or it will fail.

Resistance to Shock
Nina might technically be a Bremelith, but she was born as, considers herself to be, and was raised as a Vak'nasul. Vak'nasul nervous systems as wired through various different ways such that no matter what injury is taken or how terrible of damage is inflicted, the people will not go into shock. Because she was born as this, while she is used to keeping her eternal appearance human by now, her organs and nervous system are usually wired like a Vak'nasul's, unless she's actively changing them. What this means is that no matter how much pain she is in, unless something like blood loss kicks in, she won't black out.

Learned Abilities
Extremely High Pain Tolerance
Apart from all of her natural abilities, as a result of living a long and hard life - most of which was in the midst of combat - Nina had developed an absurdly high pain threshold. She can take a get deal of damage physically before it even begins to show on her and actually, has developed a bit of a fascination with pain in general; inflicting and having it inflicted on her. Thus, until it reaches the point of being life-threatening most sensations of pain will at best amuse her and at worst annoy her. This is not to say that she is unaffected; merely that she won't Show that he's affected as much as other people will, and as such she could be battered, beaten, and bruised and she'll still keep on coming.

Mind you, that's with physical pains. Mentally, there are numerous chinks in her "armor;" there are gaping wide insecurities that Nina has just waiting to be prodded. However, Nina doesn't let on about a lot of these and most of them are alarmingly specific. Bearing this in mind, it's pretty hard to make her feel hurt in general.

Closed Mind
Nina's dealt with a lot of telepaths over the years. Thus, she's got some degree of mastery with blocking out her mind for anyone entering it ever. She has so many mental barriers she keeps up all the time it would probably be funny to the average person. As it stands, I don't think there is anyone in Luceti powerful enough to break her mental barriers, because she regularly deals with an S2 telepath she can keep up unless he's trying actively to break them. And an S2 can speak mentally with/read someone's mind from across a planet so long as he can focus on them to contextualize this.

General Knowledge
Nina's an old dog, having lived over four thousand years. While she would prefer to be a bulldog and just bust into situations nine times out of ten, Nina is far too paranoid to let things go to chance like that. She has a lot of intelligence and uses it to her advantage. While most if not all of her intel is about her home universe, this means that in Luceti she'll go out of her way to spy on people, hack entries, the works. That sort of thing.

It is also worth noting that when applied to combat, this means Nina is very creative and is quite used to combating almost every type of fighting style you can imagine. She's seen it, fought it, and probably killed it all before at some point if it can exist in her galaxy. This also means her own combat style is prone to changing on a dime in the midst of fighting. She can operate and fight with almost every weapon, improvised or otherwise, and can use most all types of guns that exist in her canon.

Acting Ability
One talent of Nina's which may or may not be played up in Luceti as often as in canon is that she has a knack for playing the part of being other people convincingly. While it helps that she can take someone's form and voice, she also can impersonate their physical quirks, speech patterns, and other such things as long as she's been given amble time to observe them.

What this also means is that Nina has an amazing poker face. No one in Luceti should really be able to tell if she's lying or not much of ever unless she's deliberately sounding insincere. She can make her emotions "well up" on command and generally has a good control over all things "acting" related.

Past Experiences
While this goes hand in hand with general knowledge, Nina has experienced a lot in her life, and because of this she is often quick to jump to (often surprisingly accurate) conclusions about a given situation. However, conversely, it has also made her extremely paranoid. Nina literally sleeps with her eyes open and in meeting sometime tends to expect the worst in them right off the bat. However, because of this, she also has a tendency to read people and a tendency to have "seen it before" about almost everything. Because chance are she, well, has.

Inherited Abilities
Voidblade
Nina's sword is a unique Vak'nasul sword called a "Voidblade" by most of the galaxy and it's one that she's had for well over two thousand years now. The sword is one of the objects she is most intimately familiar with of anything in the galaxy. Voidblades are made of a specialized mineral found deep within the mantle of the Voidworld. This unique material has an interesting cancellation property: it naturally emits enough and specialized radiation to work effectively as an EMP device. What this means is that Voidblades can damage non-specialized electronics around them, and more importantly are the bane of force-fields or shielf technology in Nina's canon: they can cut right through the barriers most cultures have designed.

The material looks like nothing so much as onyx, but it is much stronger. Nina keeps her blade a a single-bladed one-handed sword most of the time, it is absurdly sharp and perhaps bast compared to a katana, though she doesn't keep it curved as a rule. The interesting part about it, however, is that Nina is so used to the structure of her Voidblade that she can manipulate it's molecular structure much easier than she can with anything else. The effective result is that that she can change the shape and size of the blade and such. The mass, however, is always the same: so when she reduces the blade into a knife it becomes absurdly dense and therefore heavy.

Radioactivity Immunity
Chances are, this will never come up in Luceti, but the Voidworld on which Nina was born and raised is one of the more radioactive places in the entire galaxy. It is filled with almost any sort of radiation you can imagine and filled with plenty humans don't know either due both to natural effects and an open pit to the planet's core having been opened during the downfall of their empire. The practical result of this is that the Vak'nasul (a hearty species to begin with) in "modern" times all have an all-but immunity to radioactive mutations. This is to say that Nina could walk right into a nuclear reactor and ignoring the heat she would have no problems.
