any idea why EFF is celebrating their 18th anniversary six months before the actual date? (you may not know, but I don't know who else to ask :-)

Actually, it's six months after the actual date. The first announcement of the formation of the EFF was in July, 1990. About a year later (May/June, 1991) is when 501(c)3 status was achieved. Membership numbers started to be assigned maybe in January, 1992, if I recall correctly. Some number of years later, they stopped using membership numbers.

Perhaps they're just using the anniversary as an excuse for a fundraiser. Other anniversary parties have been at different times of the year.
