Suffering is part of what defines us, at least on this world. Being ignorant of others' suffering is not a crime or a sin, I think. When we are reminded that others suffer quietly, silently, with courage or with dignity it is not diminished because we are oblivious, nor is it enhanced because we attend to it. I'm not sure that there is a price that we must pay, though it remains an ethical question to be pondered best in the presence of one's God. Fortunately, we are maleable beings capable of change for the better and leaps of grand insight. We are who we are. How we attend to our awareness of the total human condition is an ongoing process involving discovering ourselves in relation to those around us.
