Wow ... seriously ... wow. All this is going to do is encourage people to NOT take care of their pets -- vaccinations, spay/neutering. The state could have an explosion in the pet population that will cost them a lot more to take care of.

HOW is pet care a luxury? In these hard times, pets are often the only thing keeping people sane.

I could understand a Pet-Luxury-Tax on stuff like pet grooming. We take Buttercup to the groomers every 2 months, something I could do myself. But even with tip it's only $25 each time -- we use the Doggie Groomer School and she's a Beagle so there's not much to trim.

Encouraging pet health is good for everyone. I think Mr. Govenator needs to have his head examined!

Your spay/neuter point is an excellent one. This is a situation where the "cure" could just make the patient (i.e. California's economy) even sicker.

This is the dumbest idea I've ever heard of. Wanna save money? Ignore the health of your pets! I wish that I had a CA number so I could call. *grumble*

I thought it was a crime to neglect animals and let them suffer. Now the Govenor is pushing policy that will effectively foster neglect of animals.

I've forwarded your message to my California friends with pets. I'm pissed on their behalf! I've had to take my cat to the vet several times this year, and it was not a luxury. What was I supposed to do, watch him suffer?!

I hear you. It's ridiculous. I know that CA desperately needs revenue, but surely there's something better to tax. I imagine the Humane Society has gotten wind of this by now, so hopefully pressure will come from that angle too.

Thanks for passing this info along.
