***THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS POST***
I'm very excited over this movie adaptation, and can not WAIT until December 7th. That being said, I am also incredibly apprehensive. I always kind of pushed aside the criticisms of movies not being as good as their books and how critical they could be in judging a movie. Up until this point, never had a book I ( Read more... )

Another point to made: If you (not you, Chris, haha) read the book and actually paid attention to it all, you would know what Dust, Shadows, etc.. is and that The Authority wasn't actually killed, but instead dispersed into Dust particles and became a part of everything. If you completely missed the Dust aspect (don't really know how you can), The Authority still wasn't killed, but his glass litter was dropped to the ground in the midst of battle. Lyra and Will attempted to save him but he vaporized into Dust. THUS..... no killing, just Death, or Life, taking it's natural course.

I think that one of the things that Pullman is trying to show is what Chris points out: all of the horrible acts done in God's name.

Too many more ideas are wafting around in my head for me to make any sense and I think I've already said enough.

"Sure, the main message of the trilogy is living life to it's fullest here and now, but why is that a bad thing? A film and our lives in general can be moral without adding on a religious message, that does not mean it's atheist! The philosophical ideas that the story conveys are comparable to that of Humanism, the idea that life in this world should not be taken for granted."
So I was pretty much lost since I've never read any of the books or know anything about the story, but I just thought I would add that it actually says in the bible to "live every day as if it were your last" which pretty much coincides with your point, so I don't see why anyone would find that atheist-like. And now I'm done.
