The arts are necessary in the world, just like the sciences are, for progression. Art, like science, is a way to process life and help us to organize the world. It alleviates confusion and promotes thought, just at a more personal level. Also, everyone perceives the world around them from their very own point of view. It's impossible to experience things through another's senses. However, through art, we are able to get closer to other people's perceptions of life. It unites people on an emotional level... oh wait you all ready wrote that.
