Needing advice

Well, this is about Nadia gaining about 30 pounds since summer. She was a chubby kid( ages 10 - 12), through no fault of her own. I saw her suffer and cry in dressing rooms. Then.... when she turned 13, she grew a few inches and thinned out beautifully.  Then, onto high school and she began to put on a few pounds.... not too bad but since I know ( Read more... )

The poor sweetie! Are you sure you aren't writing about me? :-D

Unfortunately, we are a terrible junk-food-junkie society. Even though I love healthy food, I stress eat. And I understand the weight gain, because since school started, I've gained about 40 lbs.

Honestly, I don't know if there is anything you CAN do for her. Because until she's mentally ready to change her eating habits and step up her exercise, she won't do it. Please don't beat me, but your making comments probably does upset her more. I say that only because I know how I've reacted when I've had comments made to me. Sorry, hun.

Sometimes even just moving your body a little bit helps. Keep asking her if she wants to go on a walk with you. Never know... maybe eventually she will!

I know you are right! But it so hard to bite my tongue when she says, "I need ice cream... or I am off to Taco Bell with Rachel". I want to scream!!!!!!!!!!!
But..... I will try and set a good example.

Ugh is right! It's so hard to bite one's tongue, but I do agree with lwbrcurr67 that it only makes it worse to point out the obvious. It's so true that until you really WANT to change your eating habits and exercise, no amount of gentle suggestions is going to do any good, and it gives kids something to resent you for later- or at least that's how it worked with me and my mom. I still remember every single little comment she made about my bouts of overeating and my shape, and it's been 30 years!

I think it's a great idea to ask her to go walking with you. And even if she does forage for her own junk food outside the house, I think keeping mostly healthy stuff at home is a good idea, too. Sometimes, you get into a junk foody mood and if there's nothing good at home, it's too much of an effort to get shoes on and go out and get pizza, so you just settle for an apple or a turkey sandwich instead.
