Akihiko lived alone for the most part. There were the occasional guests, old friends from before, but generally speaking, he tended to come home to an empty house. So it was perfectly understandable that he was expecting just about anything when he returned from work only to find the front door slightly ajar and all the lights on. For anyone else the deadly looking spear propped across the doorway to the kitchen would have been even more disturbing. Thankfully, it was an extremely familiar piece of hardware and put most of his apprehensions to rest. Most of them.
"You should stop hauling that around," Akihiko said casually as he stepped over the haft and entered the kitchen, "It could get you arrested."
Ken grinned but didn't take his eyes off whatever it was that he was cooking. "What for? It's just an old spear. S'not like I could really hurt anybody with it. I just keep it around for sentimental reasons. That's all."
"I see you've had this sort of conversation before," Akihiko deadpanned as he peered over Ken's shoulder and dubiously eyed the conconction bubbling on his stove. Ken's food was usually edible, and even tasty at times, but there was always a first time for everything. Still, it didn't smell bad or anything, so maybe he was safe for the moment.
"Well, it is kind of hard to ignore," Ken explained cheerfully as he stirred the stew. "But I'm cute enough to get away with it. A little sob story here and there never hurt anybody, and I've only been threatened with handcuffs once, so it's all good."
"Really now?" Akihiko muttered almost absently as he peeled his gloves off, then set them down on the counter. "And how'd you get out of that one?"
"I just pointed out that one of my best friends is a fellow police officer and that if I did anything really stupid, I'd be seeing more than just handcuffs," Ken replied breezily.
"Oh, of course," Akihiko grumbled as he reached down and pulled out his own personal pair of handcuffs. "Well, you're right about one thing. These would probably be the very last thing I hit you with if you went and did something stupid."
"Which is why I'll always be on the straight and narrow," Ken crowed, then winced as Akihiko cuffed him lightly on the head. "Getting punched out by you is not something I ever want to repeat. Ow."
"Brat."
