Today is Saturday.   Two weeks ago - almost, it was on a Sunday and most places were closed - we contacted a bunch of countertop fabricators to ask them if they could cut runnels into granite.  We got some positive responses, and were ready to go check out the options.  Stoneyards being normal business-hours kinds of places, and located pretty far ( Read more... )

Our current house has ceramic tile countertops, which when we moved in Mike hated and I was like "eh, whatever". He would get butcherblock if it's up to him.

What I've heard about granite is that it breaks more easily than one would expect - especially if hot pots are placed on it - and that you always *always* want to use a cutting board or you will wreck both the surface and your knife. Something like Corian is more forgiving and more durable in addition to being cheaper.

Corian is definitely more forgiving. It's also definitely not cheaper, except for the one color that's on discount. It's complicated, but I'm trying to look at it as "no bad choices" instead of "no perfect choices".
