Enquiring Minds Want To Know

Oct 20, 2010 20:26

I'm putting S. to bed:

- "Do you have any questions?"
- "Yes, actually, I have five questions."
- "Okay..."
- "First: What does love do?"
"Second: How is flour made?"
"Third: What does 'sleep tight' mean?"
"Fourth: How do light bulbs work?"
"Fifth: How are bowls made?"
- "..."

It sounds like this child is Quite Ready for a trip to the Smithsonian museums.

Also, there's apparently at least one historic grist mill still in operation in New England, but only in the summertime.

Did you know that sleep tight was from back in the days when mattresses were put on top of ropes strung through a wooden frame? It meant may the ropes holding your mattress be tight so it doesn't sag.

Next time you come up bring your visas/passports and we'll go to King's Landing in Canada--they have an old grist mill, an old saw mill, a blacksmith shop, and lots of neat stuff. If you're there at the right time you can see them cooking in the fireplace, spinning wool, weaving, making cheese... http://www.kingslanding.nb.ca/english/index.htm

I love this child and her beautiful mind. I must see her soon!

("What does love do?" Wow. I don't think I've ever heard that question asked in exactly that way.)
