The hours had passed too slowly, it seemed. On the last days, every moment was spent running from a side to another, living quickly but happily, treasuring each fleeting moment. Perhaps that had been the mistake done. The members of their group - of their family - seemed to have forgotten slightly about the dangers outside their home’s walls. Forgotten about their main worries, their fears, lost in the happiness born from sheer relief. So many friends around them, the normalcy acquired, had managed to make them forget too easily about what had become usual in their lives. Yuan knew she had left those worries in the back of her mind. Like a faded nightmare, those memories had been pushed back, drowned them beneath all the good ones made recently.

It had been such a harsh awakening. Bai Hua had been as prepared as herself, surprised and then afraid, terrified when the two men had reached the hotel. Yuan couldn’t really serve as a support then, her throat constricting and her fear rushing through her veins. There wasn’t any other thing to concentrate in other than the man passing out in front of her. No questions, no doubts, just sheer terror which made her reach out for him and refuse to let go.

She was still doing so. Settled to the side of their bed, his hand clasped strongly in her hers, she continued her silent vigil. The last time she had forced herself to eat had been a while ago and, the only moment spared away from that room had been to check on Ah Feng and her friend. Yuan still felt regret for that, allowing Bai Hua to deal with that almost alone. It was selfish, hurtful even, but she couldn’t compel herself to act against her own urges for long.

There was barely a sound as the woman shifted in her seat, moving silently in an unconscious movement to settle the blankets around his form. It was truly an unneeded gesture, as if it had been repeated over and over for the last hours. A way to reassure herself as any other. A small part of her, selfish and very child-like, wished to reach out for someone. Her mother, her sister, her brother, anyone who would tell her that everything would be alright for both men. Until the larger part of her took over and refused to leave his side.

He would wake. And when he did, everything would be fine once more. Yuan had to believe in that, as strongly as she could otherwise, there would be little way to keep her composure.
