Junior Detective Tohru Adachi was sent from the big city to play rookie assistant in rural Inaba. Most of his time was spent getting coffee and filing paperwork for his grouchy partner, Ryotaro Dojima. Until the day a strange fog rolled into town, and with it a bunch of mysterious murders and the more mysterious Souji Seta...
Or at least, that's the story on the surface. It's missing a few key elements. Adachi's disrespect for the law, for one thing. He became a cop to carry a gun, and despite his friendly, bumbling demeanour, he was bored and angry about his small-town transferral. Nor does it mention the strange power he attained, to push his hand inside the screen of the television. Most importantly, it fails to mention the last person the young, female murder victims spoke to was Tohru Adachi - right before he pushed them through to the deadly world within the television for refusing his advances.
Adachi's involvement isn't the first piece of the puzzle that is the murders/kidnappings in Inaba, and nor is it the last. The strange power, the Midnight Channel, the shadow-filled land inside the TV; a greater power was behind those. But Adachi cracked and murdered two people, the second with total deliberation, he talked someone else into kidnapping several more, and he obscured information relating to the case as he went. Of course, he should be in jail.
After Souji fought, defeated and captured him, Adachi was taken back to the real world. His sentence was light, after he plead insanity, substantiated by the inexplicable supernatural elements of the case. Six months of jail time and heavy medication and Adachi was back on the streets again - whereby he broke his parole, flushed the meds, and hopped on the first train to Desai. Time to start a new life.
