Notes: mixed feelings. but this was like, the favorite thing i'd written for a long time.

sasuke doesn’t like any other candy, except red starburst.

on sasuke’s 14th birthday (because naruto always, always remembered) naruto bought fifteen packs of starburst, threw out all the strawberry, lemon, and orange flavors, and dumped cherry squares into a small plastic grocery bag. he sits on the dusty curb aching for the tip-toe stares but gain nothing else, and waits outside a house with a faded fan on the wooden gates.

he doesn’t like it when he stares.

on sasuke’s last birthday, he had brought a cake, complete with the silky white frosting layered on top, sugar shining so sweetly it could’ve called down the angels from heaven (okay, somewhat of an exaggeration, but sasuke’s porchlight illuminated it nicely and naruto was so struck by the beauty standing on the other side of the doorframe that he could’ve loved anything at that moment.), to sasuke’s house, stood on the steps and waited for the other boy’s approval. sasuke merely stared. finally he said,

“i don’t like sweets.”

naruto wanted to die.

“i. spent. my. entire. life’s. savings. on. this. damn. cake. for. your. damn. birthday. and. you tell me that you don’t like sweets?!” hyperventilation wasn’t far - naruto was breathing so heavily he could’ve been running a 20-mile marathon beforehand, and sasuke wouldn’t have known the difference.

“i never asked you to get anything for my birthday. and besides, get your facts right before you impose things on other people.”

naruto shoved the damn thing into sasuke’s arms anyway. “take it. it’s yours.”

sighing, sasuke lowered his head and set the cake on the floor beside him. “i can’t eat this.”

“i know, but -”

“no, naruto, i REALLY, really can”t eat this.”

it would’ve been the understatement of the year to say that naruto was entirely confused. but sasuke (damn that beautiful boy) just wouldn’t say anymore, or even look at him, only show him under the orange glow how neatly his hair fell in front of his face, like fucking waterfalls framing the sky. the sight seduced his eyes, and naruto - he never really held so much self-restraint - he couldn’t help it - he couldn’t help but take a step forward, hook his fingers behind the soft arch of sasuke’s white neck, and pull the boy into a kiss.

(needless to say, it was magic. it was all types of electricity. sasuke, stiff at first, came alive, gasping for breath between tugs of lips, like he’s been underwater and drowning all this time, and naruto’s pulled him out on the brink of death, and oh his hands - how he grabbed at naruto’s hips as if it was the only lifesaver for him. they moved towards each other, a little closer each time, and by this point, naruto was just hurting, hurting, it hurt to love him so much, it hurt to touch him so much, his fingers went numb.

and when they broke apart, it hurt not to touch.)

sasuke’s cheeks went into a heated flush. “th-thank you for the cake,” and he started to close the door, but naruto grabbed it before it could make the close. he leaned in, and, with a smile, muttered, “you bastard, do you know how much i’m in love with you right now?”

and sasuke, who must’ve been intoxicated with the taste, whispered back, “did you know that i like cherry starburst?”

it is raining. the red seeps through pinholes, melting, melting, and soon enough the street is covered with the sticky sweet of abandonment.

writing, naruto
