Title: hide and seek
Rating: PG-13 (?)
Length: Drabble
Characters/Pairings: HijiGin
Summary: "he’s watching desperate housewives or mtv when hijikata enters the room, and scoffs."
Notes: it's rare for me to write gintama fic, and even more ironically, hijigin, considering how although i do enthusiastically ship everything and anything in gintama-verse, hijioki surpasses all the others by a considerable stretch. but i guess there's a first time for everything, isn't there? :P

or, more simply put, hide and seek (but never find).

-

he’s watching desperate housewives or mtv when hijikata enters the room, and scoffs.

“what the hell are you doing,” he says simply.

gintoki barely turns around to acknowledge him. “eh? what are you talking about? i’m watching tv. clearly.”

“i meant, dumb one,” he emphasizes, stepping over the empty bags of chips that had not been there that morning, “what are you doing in my house, eating my food, watching my tv, sitting on my couch, and being an all-around asshole?”

“i’m hurt,” gin says dryly. “and here i thought last night, you said you loved me.”

hijikata can only wince at the memories. “get out,” he grits between his teeth and smoking cigarette.

gin flicks another just-emptied bag on the floor. “see, see. that’s why i don’t like you anyway - no sense of humor, whatsoever. well, i have news for you, mister -” he switches the channel back to desperate housewives “- and that is, to get over yourself.”

“i don’t see why you have to do this.”

“do what?”

“physically and mentally drive me nuts until i go positively bald from anger.”

“you seem to insinuate i do this on purpose.”

hijikata is seething into a half-boiled mess on the floor. gintoki sighs. “whatever.” he stands up. “seems no one wants me. i’m okay with that but-”

“- stop playing your damn pity card -”

“-why can’t hijikata-kun just invite me over one day?”

he couldn’t meet those dead fish eyes, which no longer seemed dead. it scared the shit out of hijikata - like, this kid can be something else? something like a dragon? impossible, but he couldn’t keep his mind off it.

“well. see ya, then.”

“wait.”

gin turns around slowly. “…yeah?”

hijikata looks down at his feet. you forgot to take me with you.

“…it’s all for the best.”

“sure.” when gintoki left, the blare of housewife banter still raged in the background, small zigzags of sound crossing the air until hijikata couldn’t stand it anymore.
