'Ternship Follies

May 10, 2006 23:12

I'm in a quandary, a good kind of a quandary, and I'm turning to the most reliable source of received wisdom readily available (the internet, or livejournal, they both work) for advice: I must accept one of the following three internships by Friday, and I can't decide which one to spring for. So I'm taking a reader's poll. You may vote for one, or ( Read more... )

Choice B sounds cool, but Boston is cooler than New York. It's a shame...I still say B

I may be able to get you free Harvard housing (and maybe board, too) if you sell a few ads for a small, somewhat Vertical-like weekly newspaper. Would this be of interest? I can definitely ask.

By subway, Harvard is about 15 minutes from downtown Boston, but there is more to do here than there.

Hi Brian. I have sent e-mails to a number of sources tonight, and will let you know what I can suss out. I will do my very best to find you a source of housing.

It would be immensely helpful if you could send me your e-mail, as I may need to contact you that way. Mine, for my part, is pape (at) fas.harvard.edu.

Hey Allie,

For some reason my e-mail seems unwilling to send electronic letters to your address. My address is bwk4@duke.edu; feel free to contact me whenever the fancy strikes you. I owe you one. Perhaps not a large one, but a medium-sized one at the least.

My friend Eggy is a Bostonian! I will ask him for housing advice! anonymous May 11 2006, 20:54:33 UTC
Well, if it were me, Boston. Hands down.

Mind, there is something very attractive about helping out in your own community. There's probably some adage to that effect, "all great change begins at home", or the like. When the mayor of Curitiba was asked how we can best change the world he said, "Start with your own backyard".

Ummmm... the girlfriend factor. That's a mighty factor, n'est-ce pas? Part-time job also good. Weekly class could be good. Stipend definitely good.

However, Boston.

Yeah.

Boston is certainly not cheap to live in. Unfortunately I don't know of anyone who needs a roommate or any place cheap to live. From what it sounds like, the job in Boston doesn't sound too lucrative (my impressions from what you've written) especially if your pay isn't going to be all that great. The best thing to do would be to try HousingMaps.com or Craigslist.org and see what you can there.

New York is also expensive to live in (from what I hear). I guess I would personally choose the one in Durham, NC. It sounds like the best option (you seem most optimistic about it).

Eggy
