If one uses Stoicism like the jesus prayer, in hopes happiness will as a side affect follow, all that will be achieved is a guilty rehearsed indifference. On the other hand, with happiness as the goal, and Stoicism used as a means to eliminate the obstacles, the mantra will be more as a reminder and a tool, and the resulting affect may be true happiness. At least, you know, here's hoping.

I don't know what the Jesus prayer is, but I don't think I want my Stoicism to be that. But yes, I was expecting happiness more as a side-effect than a goal. This I admit.
